dubai urban elements challenge
The central challenge of this competition is to design urban furniture in Dubai that enhances the city's identity across its seven distinct zones—two residential zones, two industrial zones, a historical and artistic zone, a suburban zone, and a high-end zone—while also enriching the urban realm for street users.
Our project, Echoes of Dubai, responds to this challenge with the approach: “Crafted from the land, designed for generations.” Every element of the design—its inspiration, materials, and tectonics—is rooted in Dubai’s local context.
We discovered that each Islamic geometric pattern carries its own principles and meanings. We believe each of the seven zones should be paired with a specific geometric pattern philosophy to express the unique history and character of that zone. Accordingly, the form and placement of the urban furniture are derived from the chosen geometric patterns.
To address Dubai’s intense street-level heat, modular canopies are introduced, inspired by the logic of the traditional Bedouin tent, which consists of a support structure—poles and fabric. In our design, to ensure durability and sustainability, we have selected aluminum for the poles and PTFE-coated fiberglass tensile membrane for the canopy fabric. The furniture elements are crafted from rammed earth, sourced locally, as a tribute to the material heritage of old Dubai, which is still echoed throughout the city’s urban and suburban landscapes. These furniture pieces are designed to embody the spirit of place and preserve the vernacular identity of Dubai for generations to come. The result is a series of urban actors that respond to the specific needs of each zone, bridging the gap between diverse communities through features such as shaded gathering spots, playful landscapes, spontaneous bazaars, and waiting areas.
